MP4 Sample Files
MP4 files are one of the most common video file formats. Most MP4 files have the .mp4 file extension,
although some may have the .3gp extension. The MP4 file type is a container for video, audio but also
subtitles and still images.

What is an MP4 file?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format in use today. It is a container, which means the .mp4 file wraps a separate video stream, audio stream and optional subtitles and metadata into one file. Almost every browser, phone, television and editing tool can play an MP4, which is why it is the default choice for web video and downloads.
How these sample MP4 files were made
The shorter clips are generated with FFmpeg from a moving test pattern, encoded as H.264 video at 24 frames per second with a 440 Hz AAC audio tone. The set includes a five-second clip at 720p, 1080p and 4K, a longer 30-second 1080p clip, a vertical 1080x1920 clip for testing portrait and social video, and a clip with no audio track at all. Sizes run from around 2 MB up to roughly 640 MB for the 4K download, so you can pick a file that matches what you need to test.
Technical details
Video is encoded with the H.264 (AVC) codec using yuv420p pixel format for maximum player compatibility. Resolutions cover 480p, 720p, 1080p and 3840x2160 (4K UHD). The no-audio file is useful for confirming how a player or pipeline behaves when an expected audio track is missing.
Common uses
Use these files to test HTML5 <video> playback, check upload size limits, exercise transcoding pipelines, test responsive or adaptive streaming, or as placeholder footage in a layout. The vertical clip is handy for testing portrait video in mobile and social layouts.
