What is a MOV file?
MOV is the QuickTime container format developed by Apple. The MP4 specification was derived from it, so the two are close relatives. MOV files are common straight out of Apple devices and cameras and are widely used as editing intermediates because the container handles high-quality video, timecode and alpha channels well.
How these sample MOV files were made
The samples are produced from a generated test pattern and wrapped in a QuickTime container with H.264 video. They are offered at 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4K so you can match the resolution to what you are testing, with sizes from around 100 MB up to roughly 660 MB at 4K.
Technical details
The .mov container supports a wide range of codecs and is well suited to editing workflows. Playback is reliable in the Apple ecosystem and in professional tools such as Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro; for general web playback an MP4 is usually the safer choice.
Common uses
Use these files to test video editing imports, Apple device and QuickTime playback, or conversion from MOV to a web-friendly format such as MP4 or WebM.
