What is an OGG file?

OGG is an open, royalty-free container, most commonly carrying audio encoded with the Vorbis codec. It offers lossy compression comparable to MP3 but without any licensing cost, which is why it is popular in games, open-source applications and web audio.

How these sample OGG files were made

The samples are generated with FFmpeg using the Vorbis encoder from a 440 Hz sine tone, offered at a few different lengths so you can choose a short clip or a longer one.

Technical details

OGG Vorbis is a lossy format, so it discards some detail to keep files small, but it is fully open and free of patent restrictions. Support is good in modern browsers and game engines, though not as universal as MP3.

Common uses

Use these files to test game audio pipelines, open-source media players, web audio playback, or conversion between OGG and other audio formats.
