Mime types are a way of identifying files. Every file has a mime type, even if it is one that is provided as a default fallback.

Mime types are used to help the operating system and applications work out what to do with a file. It's what powers that common "Open with..." dialog that we're all too familiar with.

IANA, an authority known for managing domain names, has provided a list of many known mime types for lots of different file types.

The list is huge, so we'll just link to it rather than providing a mirror.
